Subject: Flier on ID Theft Forum
All:
Attached please find a flier for an upcoming ID Theft forum conducted by the
Alexandria Consumer Affairs Commission (ACAC). As indicated, it will be
held on 11 April at the George Washington Middle School, 1105 Mount Vernon
Avenue, Alexandria (near the Braddock Road Metro) from 7:30p to
approximately 9:00p. I would appreciate it if you could forward to any
interested parties who might like to attend. While the forum is being held
in Alexandria, and is being conducted by the ACAC, it is open (free) to all
individuals and entities who have an interest in the subject matter. We
have a pretty good line up of speakers, with Joanna Crane, who currently
serves as head of the ID theft and fraud section at the Federal Trade
Commission, and John Schick, who heads up, among other things, the ID fraud
enforcement section at the Office of the U.S. Postal Inspector. We also
have a speaker from the banking industry and hope to have someone from the
National Center for Victims of Crime as well.
Through this forum we will 1) Define identity theft, with a discussion as to
the parties who are most vulnerable; 2) discuss means by which individuals
can avoid or prevent becoming victims of this type of crime; 3) discuss
methods by which to repair the damage inflicted by identity thieves, and
reclaim stolen identities generally; and 4) discuss current law enforcement
methods being used to combat ID theft generally. We also plan to have a
brief Q&A session following the presentation. In addition, we expect that
the forum will be filmed and hopefully broadcast by Comcast Cable in
Alexandria.
